How to Bulletproof Your Willpower

Imagine what you could achieve if you doubled your willpower!

So that losing weight, starting exercise, even kicking the booze is not a complete white knuckle ride!

It is possible! But willpower is like a muscle, it needs to be regularly worked and tested.

It is all about self-control and sadly you can’t wish for it or take it in a tablet, YOU have to work for it!

Those with this elusive superpower focus on the long-term gain over instant gratification, which is bloody hard work most of the time!

The glass of wine/chocolate biscuit now over future weight loss.

Mindset is everything

Our mind set and physiology at any given moment will determine our ability to exert such will.

Day-in day-out we operate on autopilot, giving into our impulses at the drop of a hat.

Often not even noticing when we are sabotaging ourselves.

Research shows that 2-3 days of mindfulness for 10 minutes, improves focus and energy, meaning you are less stressed, and your willpower will increase.

Mindfulness eliminates the noise and slows down your thought patterns so you can act, rather than react, meaning you are able to make the right choices in any particular moment.

You need willpower to get willpower.

Willpower, habits and self-control can set off a chain of good actions that lead to amazing results.

Like how going to the gym helps you make healthier food choices, that help you sleep better, which will help increase your willpower and so on!

It’s worth noting that will is generally stronger at the start of the day, so if you have tasks that you know will give great results but take will power to achieve, get them done first thing.

The later in the day, the more chance they will get shelved!

3 things that affect our “willpower”


First is the amount of sleep we have had or how tired we are.

Numerous studies have shown how lack of sleep makes us eat more sugary, fatty foods. 

Even after one late night we are much less able to resist temptations – so get those zzz’s in girls!


The thing to understand about sugar is that it is a DRUG. 

It’s highly addictive and like any drug, once it’s in the blood stream, getting that next “hit”, or dopamine high, will consume you!

It will leave you tired, irritable and craving more as you literally come down from the blood sugar high.

Breaking your addiction to the white stuff is vital if you want to be able to exercise your willpower.


Scientists have found that stress causes a lack of connectivity in the brain and with that comes a direct hit on our willpower.

If you’re running around at 100 mph firefighting, then flexing your will power muscle is never easy.

When you walk in the door at night exhausted & hungry with mouths to feed fast you need all the self-control you can muster to start cooking rather than shove in a pizza, right?

Stress makes overcoming temptation hard – again short-term gain (quick and easy pizza) for long term results (health and weight loss).

Practise daily

On SFW we practise increasing our willpower on a daily basis and start with two sure fire strategy’s…

  1. Keeping a food diary – where focus goes energy flows!
  • Making a planning – having a plan really helps at the dangerous times in your day.

For example…

Walking in at the end of a long day to a slow cooked meal that is ready to go will instantly make flexing your self-control muscles so much easier.

Or having your trainers in the car so you can workout on the way to work rather than procrastinating about it all day and eventually putting it off.

Start to push yourself on a daily basis.

It doesn’t have to massive; it can be the small things at first.

Ignoring the snooze button and getting 10 minutes mediation in before work.

Going to the gym, even though you’ve 101 things you could be doing.

Leaving the shop without buying the wine.

Use it or lose it ladies!
